The crowds were plentiful on a warm and sunny day at the start of the Mosier Twin Tunnel 3k, 5k and 12k Mother’s Day Run this past Sunday on Columbia River Highway in Hood River.
Of the three classifications, the 3k event had a few nail biters, with Gus and Craig Sabina duking it out on the men’s side and Christina Berryman and Sara Shafer fighting neck-and-neck in the 3k finish.
Gus Sabina got the upper hand with a time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds, besting Craig, who turned in a 16:53.
Gus Reed (18:50), Charles Young (18:51) and Josh Grotting (51:55) rounded out the field.
The photo finish put up by Berryman and Shafer, however, ended in a dead-heat for top honors, with the duo clocking in at 20:10.
Dezi Gowdy ended up in second place with a time of 20:24, Khloe Grotting had a 51:37, Sherry Smith crossed the tape in 51:40, and in sixth place was Christine Jones with her 65:04.
Beaverton resident Kayla Collins swept past the women’s group in her try at the 5k distance in a solid time of 21:08.
Jessica Crone (23:29), Rebecca Thistiethwatt (25:25), Cameo Semaia (26:17) and Shana Mattson (27:14) finished off the top-5.
Charlie Remington could not be denied in the men’s 12k race, as he pinned his ears back to motor home in 46:04 to beat Portland native Joe Dudman (47:34) by a minute and a half.
Gary Daubenspeck (50:17), Aaron Stanton (51:57), Richard Dant (58:22) and Russ Hargrave (64:48) capped the top-6 in the field of nine.
Evonne Nadelhoffer hoisted a first-place medal for her efforts in the women’s 12k event with a robust mark of 57:31 telling her story.
Celeste Nunez was nearly two minutes behind at 59:21, and Kayla Grotting placed third in 59:38.
Gricel Rosas (61:28), Amanda Hoey (62:45), Ellen Dittebrandt (77:31) and Kathy Jo Brondell (85:25) brought in the top seven participants.
