A record crowd was in attendance for the Hood River 3k, 5k and 12k Turkey Trot on Thursday, Nov. 24 held at the Mosier Twin Tunnels. “This was a huge and successful fundraiser for Mosier Community Schools,” said event volunteer Scott McMullen. “I want to offer my thanks to all for coming.”
The long-distance races had some tough competition with less than 25 seconds making the difference between first and second place in the standings.
Quinn McCabe inched ahead to take first place in the 5k race with a final time of 16 minutes and 45 seconds, besting Justin Crosswhite, who churned out a 17:05 to pick up second-place honors.
Braden Sims had an 18:14 for third place, Ben Iremonger was fourth after a 19:12 and the duo of Will Nuckoles and Shane Sheldon tied for fifth place with times of 20:17.
Gary Daubenspeck (20:31), Tommy Mattecheck (21:00), Valerie Vogt (21:17) and Chelsea Farber (22:06) rounded out the top-10 runners.
As close as the 5k race was, the 12k event was a nail biter down to the final line, as Chad Swanson, Jim Dunlap and Eric Utz were seconds apart down the home stretch.
Swanson was able to out-duel his counterparts in a top time of 47:05, in front of Dunlap (47:26) by 21 seconds and Utz (47:36) by 31 seconds.
Linda Covington placed fourth overall and was the top female 12k participant with her mark of 51:27.
Fred Rojas (53:46), Gilberto Bedilla (55:00), Pedro Castaneda (55:44), Angela Kraus (56:22), Daisy Dolan (57:18), Cella Acosta (57:19) and Alexa Fuhren (59:03) were the other runners to end up in the top-11 amongst the 12k field.
In the shortest race of the day, Kevin Payne dominated the 3k classification with his first-place tally of 13:49, a time nearly two minutes better than Connor Farlow, who had a 15:21 for second place.
Karl Williams secured third place in 15:33, Aileen McGrew added fourth after a 16:09, and both Dylan and James McGrew were tied for fifth place in the standings with their times of 16:59.
Jasmine Farlow (17:52), Carsen Farlow (17:52), Jakob Stabile (18:39), Vikkie Schlosser (21:23, Tess Marsden (21:23) and Kiera Stabile (27:13) made up the rest of the top 3k finishers.
Awards were offered to the top-3 age division winners, in all runs, and there was a random prize drawing.
This event is a fundraiser for Mosier Community School to help raise money for supplies, upgrades and other costs accrued during the school year.
“Mosier School raised well over $3000 for the event I believe. That’s wonderful,” McMullen added. “From the kids dash (so fun), to some of the serious fast competitors, it was wonderful. So many families came out on Turkey morning, getting some exercise and calories burnt, thinking of the big meal coming up. The Turkey Trot is always a good fundraiser for Mosier Community School. It was a community effort by all, not just one person.”
