The Dalles boys’ tennis team is 1-1 on the season after Thursday’s road match against Madras, with three of four singles grabbing lopsided decisions and the two doubles teams of Jesus Barajas and Luis Palomera, and Caleb Turner and Omar Rodriguez scoring straight set victories for a 5-3 non-league team triumph.
Coming off a 7-1 loss Tuesday to Ridgeview, the Riverhawks were able to rebound in impressive fashion.
“Great team effort and we played with much more confidence than our first match,” said first-year Riverhawk coach Shea MacNab. “I’m really proud of our first-year players who have stepped up and taken on varsity spots because of the lack of numbers on our team. The new kids are learning on the fly while playing in varsity matches and they are handling the pressure extremely well.”
At No. 1 singles, Christian Munoz won his match 6-0, 6-3 and William Coy kept the momentum going in his No. 3 singles match using a 6-2, 6-0 margin to grab a victory.
Joseph Singhurst then added a 6-0, 6-0 win in his No. 4 match to give the Riverhawks a 3-1 singles advantage.
At No. 2 doubles, Barajas and Palomera scored the final two points to earn a 7-5 victory in the opening set and complete the sweep after a 6-2 score.
Turner and Rodriguez came through in their No. 3 singles match by 6-4 and 6-2 to give TD its win.
Daniel Santillan and Cody McClintock lost 6-3, 6-3 in a No. 1 doubles match and the duo of Alex and Pedro Lopez were upended by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
TD loses opener to Ridgeview
On Tuesday in Redmond against Ridgeview, Christian Munoz managed the lone win in his No. 3 singles match in a 7-1 loss to the 5A Ravens.
Munoz dropped Ammon Johnson in two close sets, inching ahead 7-5 in the first set after falling behind 5-0. He then reeled off a 6-4 score in the second set to pull off the sweep.
“I was really impressed with his focus and determination,” said TD head coach Shea MacNab. “He never gave up and it paid off.”
The Dalles nearly had two wins on the day, but Griffin Martin could not get the bounces to go his way in a three-set loss.
Martin started off solid enough to earn a 6-3 win in the first set to go ahead 1-0.
However, Ridgeview’s Brett Blundell rebounded in the second set with a 7-6 win to send this showdown into a decisive third set.
There, Blundell won the tiebreaker by a 9-7 margin in the 12-point breaker.
Ethan Semlor lost 6-2, 6-2 to Dalton Lewis and Will Coy was defeated by Matt Allen, 7-6, 6-1.
Joseph Singhurst and Daniel Santillan lost 6-2, 6-2 in their No. 1 doubles match, and Jesus Barajas and Luis Palomera could not find a groove in a 6-0, 6-4 No. 2 doubles defeat.
Ridgeview’s Westley Carter and Alex Nadermann dropped Cody McClintock and Caleb Turner by scores of 6-3, 6-2 and TD’s No. 4 team of Omar Rodriguez and Pedro Lopez (TD) lost to Tim Schneider and Mitchell Wallette in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
“I was proud of how all the kids played. First match of the season is always difficult,” MacNab said. “We are focused on improving our serves and ball placement.”
After spring break, The Dalles hosts Milton-Freewater at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.
