New degrees in sociology, communication and more

CGCC’s board of directors unanimously approved all at an April meeting and are available starting July 1:

• Associate of Arts transfer degrees in human development and family services, communication, and another in sociology.

• Associate of Science degrees in human development and family services, psychology, and sociology.

“I’m grateful to our faculty and staff for the thoughtful work that brought these degrees forward. These new transfer pathways give our students clearer, more efficient routes to continue their education while aligning with statewide efforts to improve outcomes. Just as importantly, they prepare graduates for careers that are critically needed here in the Gorge, strengthening both our communities and our local workforce,” Vice President Jarett Gilbert announced through Public Information Officer Tom Penberthy.

Also, CGCC is another step closer to offering its first Bachelor’s degree: Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission approved the college’s application for a Bachelor of Applied Science in Education on April 9.

They still need approval from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which will require a “Major Substantive Change” document to prove they can meet the required standards. After all that, CGCC will be able to announce when the program is offered, President Kenneth Lawson said.
