Playing for the first time in 18 calendar days, The Dalles boys basketball team fell behind 35-23 at the break and could not dig themselves out of an early hole, as they lost by a 66-57 margin to Hood River Valley in 5A action Tuesday in Hood River.
“We gave great effort in the second half,” TD head coach Nathan Morris said. “We knew we were going to miss some shots after an 18-day break, so we were just focusing on effort and attitude going into the district playoffs. Our effort was good, but I think we can improve our attitude.”
As part of their 12-point halftime advantage, HRV drilled 12 field goals, four 3-pointers, and made 8 of 10 free throws, with Carson Flores totaling 13 points, including three from long range.
The Dalles managed 10 baskets, one 3-pointer, and hit on 2 of 3 free throw tries, as senior sharpshooter Josh Nisbet had 11 points and both Jacob Hernandez and Oscar Fernandez tallied four points each.
In all, the Riverhawks (8-10 overall, 2-3 league) made 22 field goals, five 3-pointers, and 8 of 16 from the line, 6 of 13 in the second half.
Nisbet led all scorers with 30 points, 19 in the second half; Hernandez was good for 15; Fernandez tallied four and Spencer Taylor chipped in with three points.
For first-place HRV (13-6, 7-0), German Diaz scored 22 points, Flores landed 17 and Noah Webster put up 11 points.
In all, the Eagles, who were the IMC’s No. 1 seed, hit 22 field goals, seven 3-pointers, and converted 15 of 20 free throw attempts.
The Dalles hosted a district tournament game versus No. 6 seed Ridgeview Thursday.
If the Riverhawks win, they play Saturday at No. 2 Pendleton.
A loss there would put TD in the consolation bracket for a contest versus a team and location to be determined Monday, and a victory would move them to a Tuesday tilt for the third and final state spot.
