THE DALLES golfer Iliana Telles putts from 10-feet out for par in tournament play earlier this season in The Dalles. Monday in Pendleton, Telles lost on the first playoff hole to take second with a 76 and the Riverhawks shot a combined 411 to place fifth at the Wildhorse Invitational Tournament.
In three events to start the 2015 season, The Dalles girls’ golf team has cut nearly 100 strokes off its scores, going from 513 to 450 to 413 in a span of 21 calendar days.
Iliana Telles shot a personal-best 76, but lost in playoff for medalist honors and the Lady Riverhawks combined for fifth place in the team standings Monday at the Wildhorse Invitational Tournament in Pendleton.
“The girls are making good contact with the ball,” said TD head coach Dan Telles. “Their short game has improved tenfold.”
On the Wildhorse Golf Course, Telles said the overcast, chilly and breezy conditions presented its fair share of challenges, so for Iliana Telles, Brooke McCall, Abby Walker and Delaney Schanno all to shoot personal-bests was a tribute to work ethic and attention to detail.
“The girls are competitive athletes with good problem solving skills,” coach Telles said.
In her first year as a varsity golfer, McCall went from a 161 at the Riverhawk Invite on March 17 to a 104 Monday.
Walker carded a 109, which was a 26 stroke improvement from her first tournament, and Schanno, who went for a 142 last Friday at Ridgeview, turned in a 125 on her scorecard.
Emily Baumgart, out of DeSales High School in Washington, also shot a 76 along with Iliana Telles, but won on a playoff to take medalist honors.
Pendleton’s Hailey Greb finished with a 77 for third place, Shelby Greb, also out of Pendleton, ended up in fourth at 82.
Heppner’s Paige Grieb shot an 85 and ended her day in fifth place individually.
Sophie Grant, of Heppner, tallied an 87, Hermiston’s Madison Welch shot a 92 and both Amanda Rea (Heppner) and Taunie Brock (Hermiston) finished with scores of 93.
Led by the efforts of Grieb and Grant, Heppner took home the team championship with a 364, besting Pendleton (371) by seven strokes.
La Grande (373), Hermiston (379), The Dalles (414) and Baker City (478) rounded out the top-6 teams. Hood River Valley and DeSales did not accrue team tallies due to limited players.
Once Jennifer Bonham returns to the lineup and given the level of upgrades the team has made to all parts of their game, the Riverhawks appear to be a group ready to take another step forward with four tournament remaining until the start of regionals on May 7-8 at Eagle Crest Resort.
“They have the desire to improve and great team chemistry,” coach Telles added.
In the boys’ tournament at Pendleton’s Wildhorse, Reilly Hegarty carded a 71 to secure medalist honors, finishing four strokes ahead of second-place Zac Adams (75), of Hermiston.
There was a four-way tie for fourth place, as the players all posted 76s on the scorecards. Pendleton scored top honors in the team standings with a 309, six shots ahead of Richland, Wash. (315). Hermiston ended up in third place (326).
Iliana Telles, McCall, Walker and the Riverhawk girls’ team next heads out to Prineville for the Crook County Invitational on Thursday for a 10 a.m. start.
TD’s boys are in Arlington at Noon on Wednesday, April 15.
