Senior Katie Wring and sophomore Leo Lehman paced The Dalles at a 16-team cross country meet Thursday at Thompson Ranch in Heppner.
Wring was third overall in the Mustang Invite’s 5,000-meter varsity girls race in a personal-best 21 minutes, 3 seconds. The Riverhawk girls were first among five scoring teams with 45 points, while Pasco, WA., was second with 50.

The trio of Wade Fields, Jacob Shandy and Diego Valdez combined to go 7 for 10 with a walk, a hit by pitch, eight runs scored and six RBIs, as the No. 10-ranked Huskies scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Heppner in Blue Mountain Conference baseball action Tuesday in Moro.
As an inexperienced freshman on the varsity golf circuit, Samantha Stansbury had the lowest score of her teammates and Lydia Evans finished with a 135, as The Dalles Riverhawk golfers averaged a 134.2 on the scorecards, with the top four putting up 521 strokes for sixth place at Tuesday’s Riverhawk Invitational at The Dalles Country Club.
The Sherman Huskies split two home games Friday against Heppner in league play in Moro. The No. 5 Huskies the first game, 5-4, but lost the nightcap, 10-9. In the opener, Jacob Justesen threw a complete-game five-hitter with three strikeouts and five walks to get the win. He also added a double, a run scored and an RBI, as the Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it, as an error on a ball hit by Justesen allowed Wyatt Stutzman to score the game-winner. Kyle Fields added a hit, a run and an RBI, and Stutzman went 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Heppner got off to a fast start in the second game, scoring four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to go ahead 8-2. Sherman chipped away and crept to within a 10-9 deficit with three runs in the fifth frame. Still down one run in the seventh, Brett Troutman led off with a single, but then Sherman hit three consecutive flyouts to end the rally. Bradley Moe had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs to lead Sherman’s 10-hit attack. Maverick Winslow added a hit, three walks and three runs. Sherman (16-5 overall, 7-2 league) hosts Irrigon at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Kolbe Bales slugged a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and shut down Heppner in the home half to help lead the Dufur Rangers to an 11-10 comeback win Saturday in a Blue Mountain Conference doubleheader played in Heppner.

Horizon Christian took six athletes to Saturday’s Big Sky district track meet in Moro last week, and two of them qualified for this weekend’s Class 1A state meet in Monmouth.
