HOOD RIVER – In recent years, The Dalles girls’ basketball team has been able to handle Hood River Valley with a high-level of success.
Friday at Vannet Court in Hood River, the Eagles led 11-9 after one quarter, and even held a 17-15 lead with two minutes and 50 seconds left in the half, before the Riverhawks finally settled in and found a groove in the last 18 minutes of regulation to secure a 59-44 win.
The win put TD in a second-place tie with Pendleton, but the biggest thing was the slow start almost came back to bit the Hawks in the end.
“I think the biggest thing to take from this game is that we need to learn to respect our opponent, because obviously in that first half, we didn’t. We didn’t play very well and they were beating us,” said TD guard Sierra Watson. “We were just standing tall like we thought we could just blow them out. They took it to their advantage and blew us out because we weren’t athletic, we were standing still and not active.”
At the 2:50 mark, the Hawks were able to finish the opening half on an 11-4 run, sparked by two field goals from Brooke McCall, a 3-pointer from Iliana Telles and 4 of 6 free throws from speedy point guard Kailin Hoylman to make the lead 26-21 at the break.
Both teams scored 13 points apiece in the third quarter, so the Hawks had a 39-34 lead with one period left to play.
In the final quarter, Hoylman sank 5 of 6 free throws, Telles added three field goals, one three, and went 2 for 3 from the line, and Lori Cimmiyotti and McCall added a basket each to spark a 20-10 run to seal the win.
TD (11-9 overall, 3-3 league) made 17 field goals, seven from long distance and connected on 19 of 24 from the line, including 8 of 11 in the second half.
Telles had 20 points, McCall added 16 and Hoylman dropped 11 points.
“We had people come off the bench and provide either rebounding, scoring, or passing and that what was great about tonight,” said coach Craig Compton.
HRV (3-16, 0-6) made good on 12 field goals, but was limited to just one in the fourth quarter. The team also hit 15 of 26 free throws.
Kassidy Davidson paced the Eagles with 12 points, Lauren Orr added 10 and Marlie Bloomster tallied seven points.
