The Dalles Dance Academy put on a show in front of a full house Saturday at The Dalles High School and raised $820 for the TDHS Flyte Dance and Cheer programs.
In all, close to 150 award-winning dancers, including Alissa Pastor, Ale Pena, Tygh Timinsky, Elizabeth Olivan and Lyric Grover were on display to perform a variety of routines for dance fans.
Bringing joy through dance has been the goal of long-time instructor Kristi Maley.
The dance studio offers competitive and non-competitive classes, where the dancers perform a variety of styles like jazz, hip hop, tap, acrobatics and even junior cheerleaders.
In those areas of expertise, the dance difficulty ranges from beginning to accelerated-advanced, depending on how long the dancers take.
Some dancers attend classes only once a week, some three days a week.
Maley said her goals are and have always been not only to teach the proper technique, but teach life lessons.
“Dance trains your mind, not only having to learn the steps, but make changes and adjust to situations as they come,” Maley said. “I teach dedication, responsibility, and how to be a part of a team. I hope to build strength, character, and bring the best out of every student.”
Maley has kids that currently cheer or have cheered at the University of Oregon, Oregon State, Western Oregon, Southern Oregon, George Fox, Willamette, Linfield and others.
She also has a former cheerleader that is a current blazer dancer, so learning from an early at the academy is a great start towards building a well-rounded dancer.
“You gain so much from being a dancer,” Maley said. “You learn self-confidence and how to perform in front of an audience.”
The high school dancers are performing at the Starlight Parade on Saturday, May 30 in Portland.
In addition, the dance club will be performing at the A.C.T.’s down on the waterfront for a showcase on Saturday, June 13. Summer lessons start June 22 and run for six weeks in duration. Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, the dance team will perform in a recital at TDHS.
The Dalles Dance Academy is located alongside The Dalles Fitness and Court Club on 731 Pomona Street West.
This program offers many competitive and non-competitive classes for boys and girls between the ages of 3-19.
