For nearly four hours, the South Wasco County volleyball team played two five-set matches against Condon-Wheeler and Mitchell-Spray, salvaging a Big Sky Conference split Saturday in Maupin.
The Lady Redsides came up short in their match against Condon-Wheeler, but were able to take a step forward in their second match of the day against the Eagle-Loggers.
SWC jumped ahead by a 1-0 score in the match versus Condon with a 25-20 win.
The Knights bounced back with aggression in their next two sets winning by marks of 25-15 and 25-18 to go ahead 2-1.
SWC then sent this match into a decisive fifth set after posing a dominant 25-14 score in the fourth set.
Down the stretch in the fifth set, the Knights and Redsides fought to a 14-all deadlock, but Condon shrugged off the pesky Redsides to take hold of a 16-14 win.
“We played Condon-Wheeler to five and came up short, 16-14,” said SWC head coach Donna Barton. “We played very good defense led by Madisen Davis and Baily Hogenkamp.”
In their second match of the afternoon against Mitchell-Spray, the Eagle Loggers struck first blood in the first set with a 25-17 winner to grab the advantage.
Down 1-0, SWC showed some inner toughness with back-to-back wins by an average of 8.5 points, adding scores of 25-17 and 25-16 to move the match into a decisive fourth set.
Mitchell-Spray won the fourth set 25-20 to tie things at 2-apiece, but then the Redsides motored through for 16-14 win to end a losing streak.
“It was a hard-fought battle with the lead changing and both teams playing good defense,” Barton said. “Maddie Davis also had a good day at the service line along with Allie Noland. Allie has played strong for us all year. She is our setter and strong floor leader.”
The goal of coming away with two weekend wins came up just a bounce or two short, but Barton and her Redsides are focused on taking another step toward district action in late October.
First, SWC heads to Hood River for a match against Horizon Christian at 5 p.m. tonight.
At 4 p.m. Wednesday, the Redsides pay host to Monument-Dayville for a league tilt.
