Through the first 16 minutes of play, the South Wasco county Redsides were playing at a peak level with upset on their minds.
No. 1-ranked Horizon Christian had an answer in the second half, however, and rolled to runs of 23-11 and 20-14 to tally a 74-56 win Friday in a Big Sky Conference tussle in Maupin.
SWC led 21-16 after one quarter and Horizon battled back using a 15-10 run to make it 31-all at the break.
With the scoring of Jared Davis, who scored 12 of his 24 points in the third quarter, as part of a 23-11 to make it 54-42 entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawk lead swelled to 20 points and the Redsides dipped into the lead to get it to within eight points, but could not complete the comeback.
Travis Hayes paced the Redsides with 14 points and Loreto Morelli poured in 10 points.
Tony Holliday had nine points, Brody Myers added eight and Devan Dammann was good enough for seven points.Mason Bloomster had 22 points for Horizon.
“Our intensity was there tonight and I felt it,” said SWC head coach Jim Hull. “So, we got to maintain it. With the teams coming up, we have an opportunity to solidify our spot in the top-4 of the district-bound teams. That is what we want to do. We want to maintain our intensity. If we can, we can use that for the second half of the season and make a run at it.”
After Saturday’s game versus Ione, the Redsides (6-7 overall, 2-3 league) then host Mitchell-Spray at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
