The Sherman Huskies kept their playoff hopes on track with an 8-7 victory Tuesday over Heppner in Blue Mountain Conference baseball action in Moro.
“The kids never gave up last night (Tuesday),” said coach Joe Justesen. “They just kept hanging in there and when it got down to crunch time, they held strong until holding out for the win.”
With the game knotted at 6-apiece in the bottom of the sixth, Nick Coleman had an RBI sacrifice fly to score Wyatt Stutzman.
Two batters later, senior Austin Kaseberg, who earlier singled, crossed the dish with an all-important insurance run on a pair of Mustang throwing errors to make it an 8-6 cushion.
Things got tense in the top of the seventh frame, as Heppner scored one run off Sherman pitcher Ben Holliday.
They had the tying run on third base with two down and big threat digging in at the plate.
Mustang slugger Jake Lindsey came up with a chance to even the score, and he blasted a hard line drive to Sherman third baseman Kyle Fields.
Fields made a diving grab on the play, but the ball squirted loose.
Lindsey had a late start and hustled to first, but Fields made the throw to Kaseberg for the out.
In all, the Huskies had nine hits and received five walks.
Maverick Winslow went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Kaseberg added a hit, two walks and two runs scored. Cody Jauken posted a hit and an RBI.
On the mound, Holliday notched his team-high fourth win of the season with a solid complete-game effort.
The senior southpaw allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
The No. 18 Huskies moved into fourth place, the top-5 in the league head to districts. Sherman (10-5-1 overall, 4-5-1 league) hosts Horizon Christian (6-8, 2-5) at 11 a.m. for a doubleheader Saturday in Moro.
