The dynamic duo of Blake Evans and Maverick Winslow combined for 302 yards rushing and five touchdowns and the Sherman Huskies grabbed an early lead and never looked back in a lopsided 62-14 win over Prairie City Friday in Moro.
All told, the Huskies totaled more than 450 yards of offense and six different players scored touchdowns.
“Offensively, we made huge strides in getting where we want to be come league,” said head coach Todd Swan. “We were able to build on our foundation and put some more tools in our tool belt.”
Brett Evans added 64 yards and a score, and Isaiah Coles checked in with 65 yards rushing and a touchdown and one catch for 20 yards and another trip to pay dirt.
Blake Evans finished with 156 yards and Winslow tacked on 146 yards and three scores.
On the other side of the ball, this stout Sherman defense has allowed 30 points in two games, using pressure to put the opposition on their heels.
Winslow and Tanner Sandquist had two sacks apiece to pace the six for the game.
“We continue to pride ourselves in our defense,” Swan added. “We had another strong performance from everyone who played on defense.”
Swan pinpointed two-point conversions as a part of the game to iron out.
Aside from the intricacies of tactical game, on the Husky sideline, Swan is happy to see his veteran leaders taking a proactive role in the tutorial process, which allows the youngsters an opportunity to develop and contribute to the team.
“I am proud of this team,” Swan said. “They have continued to take pride in Sherman football. We truly have a great group of kids who thrive on the opportunity to test themselves. Within each game exists hundreds and hundreds of battles. Our kids get excited for each one of them and I think that has allowed us to make huge strides in a short amount of time.”
The undefeated Huskies (2-0 overall) will have their hands full next week, as a road game against Imbler awaits them.
Tribe wins first game of season
Chaise Shroll scored three rushing touchdowns and added another through the air, as The Dalles Wahtonka scored their first win of the season in a 34-24 victory Friday over Benson Tech in Portland.
TDW led 14-6 after one quarter of action, and then peeled off another touchdown in the second quarter to lead 21-12 at the break.
In the final 30 minutes, the Eagle Indians maintained their edge with two more trips to the end zone that was matched by the Techmen.
For the most part, TDW was able to play a cleaner game with limited miscues to short-circuit long drives.
Overall, the Tribe had more than 300 yards of offense, as Shroll did his part to chip in an all-around effort.
TDW (1-1) hosts Crook County at 7 p.m. Friday.
