The defending 1A state champion Sherman Huskies tip off Friday for the Sherman Invitational Tournament with Stanfield, Culver and Grant Union as the road participants in this two-day boys and girls basketball event in Moro.
At 3 p.m., Stanfield and Culver lock horns in their girls’ tournament opener, and at 6 p.m., the Sherman Lady Huskies face off against Grant Union.
The boys begin play at 4:30 p.m. with Stanfield taking on Culver, and the Friday nightcap at 7:30 p.m. pits Grant Union against Kyle Fields, Max Martin, Isaiah Coles and the Huskies.
“Grant Union graduated a lot of seniors from last year’s team that ended 17th in the 2A rankings,” said Sherman coach Bill Blevins. “Last year, we managed to beat Grant on a buzzer beater shot from Jacob Justesen, while playing in the Weston McEwen Tournament.”
The girls’ title game is set for a 2 p.m. start time, and the boys’ matchup follows at 3:30 p.m.
While Justesen is out for the first month and a half of the season, Blevins will get an opportunity to see what players work in different positions.
The Huskies put forth a magical year last season with a 26-4 overall record on their way to a league championship, a district crown and a 1A state hoops championship.
After starting out 5-4 in the early going, Sherman ended the year on a 21-game winning streak.
Along with Fields, Martin and Coles, Sherman has Treve Martin, Maverick Winslow, Reese Blake, Keenan Coles and Luke Martin ready to log significant court time.
Blevins is also looking forward to seeing what Stanfield and Culver have to offer, especially since Stanfield is just a few days off a state championship football game last Saturday in Hermiston, where they ended up in second place after a 53-14 loss to Regis.
“Stanfield returns a solid nucleus including Dylan Grogan, Antonio Flores, Thyler Monkus, and Brody Woods that placed second in the Columbia Basin Conference last season,” Blevins said. “This group has some great athletes. We are excited to have them in our tournament.”
Admission will be $4 for adults and $2 for kids on each day.
