THE DALLES — The Dalles played well early in its Special District 2 football opener Oct. 4 against visiting Estacada, but things quickly deteriorated for the Riverhawks, and the Rangers won, 48-6.
Following two, one-sided nonleague shutout losses on the road, the Riverhawks (0-1 SD2, 2-3 overall) had hoped that the comfortable surroundings of playing at home for the first time since Sept. 6 would help provide them with enough momentum to get a win.
“I have to give them [Rangers] credit, because they have a good program there led by Coach Andy Mott and he has a pretty good squad,” said The Dalles Coach Nate Timmons. “We came out and I thought we looked pretty good at the beginning of the game. But then we just had too many mistakes (fumbles, interceptions, penalties) at inopportune times, and they just took advantage of our errors.”
The Rangers (1-0 SD2, 2-4 overall) went up 8-0 with 7:13 left in the first quarter when senior running back Lincoln Rathmanner scored on a five-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion run. The two-play, eight-yard scoring drive was set up by an interception thrown by The Dalles quarterback Leighton Voodre (10-for-23 passing, 114 yards).
The Riverhawks answered quickly, as sophomore Creighton Clack scored on an 86-yard kickoff return, making it 8-6. The Rangers responded on their ensuing possession with a scoring drive to go up 14-6 with 3:35 left in the quarter. The Rangers added a two-point safety when the Riverhawks fumbled a punt from their end zone, which helped Estacada take a 16-6 lead after one quarter.
The Rangers outgained the Riverhawks in total yardage, 389 to 126.
“It was a team effort on offense and defense with everybody making key plays so that we could get the win. We had a tough preseason while we faced some really good teams. Our mantra was that we just wanted to get ready for league by playing some challenging opponents," Estacada Coach Andy Mott said.
Junior Logan Mitchell (two catches, 39-yards receiving) and senior Julian Morehouse (four carries, 34 yards rushing) helped to contribute to the Riverhawk offense. Junior linebacker Reese Kinslow led the Riverhawks defensively with five tackles.
The Riverhawks play Gladstone in a 7 p.m. homecoming game Thursday in The Dalles. Timmons said the goal is to win the remaining three league games. “We still feel like we have an opportunity to make it to the state playoffs and that’s what our goal is right now,” he said.
