NWPRD to start hoops league
The Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation Department is opening registration for boys and girls from second through sixth grades.
Players will meet new friends, develop teamwork skills and practice good sportsmanship.
The registration cutoff date is Friday, Oct. 28 and the fee is $60 and $66.75 for players from out of the district.
Coaches and referees are needed for games.

The Dalles quartet of Bill Burns, Savannah Strassheim, Ezekiel Stelzer and Paige McLeod led the charge as the cross country team amassed 19 personal-bests and seven season-bests at the PIL/MHC Crossover Meet hosted by Franklin High School Wednesday in Portland.
“Overall, this was a very good day for our cross country team,” said TD head coach Bob Thouvenel.
On the varsity side, the boys had all eight harriers hit final times of less than 17 minutes and 45 seconds with Stelzer finishing third overall in 16:32.3 and Jony Nelson ending up in 10th place with a 16:56.4.
Luke McLean (17:08.0), John Miller (17:10.3) and Ethan Shubert (17:20.2) all netted top-20 outputs, and Michael Lantz added a 17:27.0 for 22nd place.
Rey Aviluz tallied a 17:39.0 to secure 26th place, and Zerin Croover wound up 29th with his 17:44.8, out of the 59 competitors to lead the varsity squad to second place (62), right behind Franklin (19).
Clackamas (95), Barlow (106), Cleveland (132), Oregon City (144) and Jefferson (191) rounded out the rest of the standings.
For the junior varsity team, Burns had a time of 18:42.0 to grab sixth place, Chase Snodgrass was 14th with a 19:11.3, Evan Despain had a 19:14.4 for 16th and David Wring, a sophomore, went for 19:17.1 to pick up 20th place.
Zack Ziegenhagen (19:25.0), Noah Holloran (19:34.7), Mark Felderman (19:56.3), Quinn Strassheim (19:56.8), Dylon Jinkins (20:38.1), Cory Cameron (20:48.8), Blake Keinlen (20:49.9), Leon Linebarger (20:57.6) and Josiah Andersen (20:59.0) ended up in the upper half of the 159 participants.
Franklin won the junior varsity race with 15 points, and Clackamas (68), Barlow (71), The Dalles (80), Oregon City (124) and Cleveland (142) made up the rest of the team finishers.
“It was a very good race for the boys,” Thouvenel said.
Paige McLeod paced the varsity girls’ team with her solid final time of 21:12.5 for 18th place, and Tressa Wood had a 21:13.3, which was good for 19th place.
Molly Nelson (21:13.8), Jenna Miller (21:38.0), Amy Requa (22:00.3), Bailey Nearing (22:12.2) and Marissa Heemsah (22:12.9) were all in the top-40 of the 53 varsity harriers.
The Dalles girls’ varsity group notched 110 points for sixth place, ending up behind Oregon City (48), Clackamas (61), Cleveland (62), Barlow (103) and Franklin (109).
On the junior varsity side, Clackamas won the event with 28 points, Cleveland was second with 62 points and The Dalles totaled 89 points to reel off third place.
Franklin (99), Barlow (115) and Oregon City (128) made up the rest of the standings.
Strassheim had the best junior varsity finish, 11th place, in an impressive 23:50.2.
Hilda Lundstrom (24:01.1), Aspen Cook (24:13.4), Maria Keilman (24:43.2), Yajaira Madrigal (25:18.2), Brianna Webber (25:29.2) and Liz Tapia (26:11.5) had solid finishes out of the field of 85.
“Amy Requa had an outstanding race, an improvement of more than a minute and forty seconds,” Thouvenel said. “Two other girls with huge improvement were Savannah Strassheim and Hilda Lundstrom.”
The Dalles has a few days of practice before hitting the courses for the Columbia River Conference Meet at Hood River Valley High School at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
