Austin Kaseberg and Treve Martin drove in three runs each, and the Sherman Huskies extended their win streak to six games after a 10-8 comeback win over 3A Umatilla in a non-league baseball contest played at Umatilla High School.
“It was a good win,” said Sherman head coach Joe Justesen. “Umatilla is a young team that is looking for their first win of the year. Those teams are always scary because they scratch and claw for everything. We are working our way to league play and battled back every time they made a run.”
With the score knotted at 5-5, the Huskies (8-4 overall) scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning on a Martin double scoring Max Martin and Bradley Moe.
Treve Martin later scored on an RBI double by Wyatt Stutzman to move the Huskies out in front, 8-5.
With Sherman up 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Max Martin was in a jam with tying runs on first and second base with two outs.
The sophomore reliever dug in and retired the final batter to preserve the win.
Jacob Justesen got the decision on the mound, as he tossed two innings of relief, giving up four runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Max Martin threw three innings of scoreless relief for his first save.
Offensively, the Huskies pounded out 10 hits, Kaseberg leading with three hits, one of them a triple, to go with three RBIs.
Treve Martin went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Maverick Winslow was 1 for 2 with two walks and a season-high three stolen bases.
After a slow start due to illness and a late basketball season, the Huskies are ascending in the right direction for the start of Blue Mountain Conference play. “We are in a good place to start league play against Culver,” coach Justesen said. “We just need to throw strikes and play great defense to back up our pitching.”
Sherman heads to Culver (3-9) for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Friday.
