In his first year as race coordinator of the Dufur Valley 5k and 10k event, Ty Wyman was happy with the turnout and final results put up by the 65 running participants.
With the Wasco County Fair coming up Saturday morning, Wyman has high hopes for another high turnout.
“We had a decent turnout of participants and had some very good times,” Wyman said.
Dufur High School athlete Ezekiel Stelzer placed third in the men’s 5k race and Micah Cathren inched ahead late to win the 10k race by 13 seconds Saturday morning in Dufur.
Stelzer’s performance was even more impressive, as he faced off against a pair of 6A Wilson High School runners, ending up just 10 seconds behind.
“He wasn’t behind by much,” Wyman said. “Coach Aaron (Olsen), from Wilson High, told me that his top two kids were the top 6A long-distant runners in state, so for Ezekiel, that’s pretty impressive.”
Stelzer had a time of 17 minutes and 41 seconds, and right behind him, were Julie Hunt (24:11) and Maria Keilman (24:57).
Also in the 5k race, Chris Highfield had a time of 26:27, Steve Hunt went for 26:51 and Elizabeth Tapia timed out in 27:29 to round out the top runners.
In the longest race of the day, Micah Cathren showed her mettle on the course with a time of 43:05, besting John Miller (43:18) by just 13 seconds on the clock.
That effort impressed Wyman.
“Micah was out here an hour earlier running and she ran up to the 10k mark instead of riding the bus with the others,” Wyman said.
Brad Anderson added a third-place time of 47:27, Amanda Hoey placed fourth in the field with a 51:55 and Darryl Houghtelling had a mark of 52:26 for fifth place.
Sid Spalding (52:57), Mark Keilman (54:57) and Janet Stauffer (59:13) added solid times to their record.
In addition to organizing the Dufur Valley Run, Wyman is heading the Wasco County Fair 3k, 5k and 10k run/walk in Tygh Valley, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The 3k and 5k races go out and back on the course, while the 10k event loops the valley floor and includes a short portion of Highway 197 in a scenic route.
Costs are $10 for men and women within the ages of 19-years-old and up, and anyone under 18 can enter for $5.
All fees include a free entry into the fair.
There is camping, bathrooms and showers available for all participants signed in.
“I’m really hoping for a good turnout like this past weekend for the Wasco County Fair run,” Wyman said.
