HOOD RIVER – On a night when offense was tough to come by, the No. 13-ranked Dufur Rangers used its stifling defense to hold upset-minded Horizon Christian at bay.
Down 15-12 at halftime, the Lady Rangers held Horizon Christian without a field goal for the final 18 minutes and used runs of 11-0 and 10-2 to score a 33-17 win Saturday in a Big Sky Conference matchup played in Hood River.
Given its three-game stretch, where Dufur is averaging 37 points a game, Dufur coach Hollie Darden was looking for ways for his team to get things in gear.
“In the second half, with our pressure, we were able to get a few shots to go down and on the defensive end of the floor, we were able to hold them down, so that was key,” the Ranger coach said. “We did a good job of persevering through a rough, ugly game where we weren’t getting it going offensively.”
Down by three points to start the second half, Dufur senior Taylor Darden put up six points and point guard Hannah Harris had five, as the Rangers (14-7 overall, 10-1 league) jumped out in front, 23-15 heading into the final period.
Aimeelyn Miller had six points and both Chloe Beeson and Harris had a basket apiece to spearhead a 10-2 run in the fourth.
Miller led the Rangers with 12 points, Harris notched 11 and Taylor Darden ended the night with six points for the Rangers, who hit 15 field goals and went 3 for 15 from the line.
Horizon (5-17, 2-9) hit six baskets, two from long range, as Paulina Finn had 12 points, none in the second half.
After tonight’s game versus Arlington, the Lady Rangers host No. 4-ranked Condon-Wheeler (20-1, 11-0) at 6 p.m. Friday.
