Nearly 400 racers were on hand for the third annual Gorge Roubaix Bike Race with participants coming in from across the Northwest Territories, Colorado and Canada.
Under sunny skies, the riders kicked off early Saturday with a race out to Mosier along the Old Historic Highway, then up Dry Creek Road before descending down State Road to Marsh Cutoff and then back to The Dalles.
On Sunday, the race started in front of Clock Tower Ales went east through town and out to Petersburg.
Riders then pressed ahead up 8-Mile Road and then onto Emerson Loop before heading out to Boyd and around on Center Ridge Road before coming back towards town on 15-Mile Road.
The format is unique in that most participants will be riding standard skinny-tired bikes even though the course takes them on a number of gravel roads throughout the region.
“Gravel road riding has exploded in the last couple of years” says race director Chad Sperry. “Many cyclists are finding out that the new equipment can withstand the rigors of riding on gravel and it allows them far more opportunities of where they can go.”
In the men’s professional/elite classification, Adam Oliver scored first-place recognition.
Jeff Werner, Kent Ross, John Shalek-Briski and Joshua Liberles rounded out the top-5 finishers.
Carl Decker, Billy Truelove, Brian Schaning, Dave Gerth and Stephen Bedford were all good enough to represent top-10 participants.
Megan Chinburg notched top honors for the women’s pro/elite race, besting Serena Bishop-Gordon and Brenna Wrye-Simpson.
Alice Pennington, Jennifer Burtner, Kristin Duyn, Megan Gray, Sydney Running, Alana Armstrong and Heidi Wood capped the fop half of the field.
Sperry liked how the race unfolded over the weekend.
“The rain from the previous week made for perfect conditions on the gravel roads utilized by the event,” Sperry said. “We received tremendous feedback from the riders as to the beauty and hospitality from the community. Overall a huge success.”
