The Dalles Babe Ruth 14U Softball team will hit the field on Wednesday afternoon for the start of pool play at the Babe Ruth World Series in Jensen Beach, Fla.
The Dalles Babe Ruth has two team still alive in the playoffs with action starting today for the 15U All-Stars in Camas, Wash.
The 14U All-Star softball players hit the field on Wednesday afternoon for the start of pool play at the World Series in Jensen Beach, Fla.
Added to the boys’ team was Raven Bierwirth, and so this group has several players who have enjoyed success on the diamond this summer.
Andrew Carlock, Henry Lee, Trenton Hough, Riley Mills and Cole McKinney are other players who will be able to contribute to this team’s success.
But the goal is to continue its current roll and move into the next rounds.
The Stars have depth at pitching and can score runs in bunches.
“We have a good team and I think we have the ability to compete with anybody in this tournament,” said Henry Lee. “We know what we have to do, so it is a matter of just doing our job and playing good baseball.”
The softball All-Stars are enroute to Florida and will face some talented teams from different regions across the states.
The 14U Stars are coming off a 4-1 record at regionals in Meridian, ID., capping their run with a 23-13 win over Kuna in the finals.
The final out came off a pitch from Kaya Byrd and led to a game-ending groundout.
The Stars scored 81 runs and combined for a .422 batting average in five games, something Sydnee Byers is hoping continues at the World Series.
“I feel like what was on the line really made us step it up,” Byers said. “We knew that the possibility of us moving on was extremely real so they pushed harder. We knew that our offense had to come through to keep us alive. I think our mindset was just to win. We wanted it all so bad that it was easy to keep our eye on the prize. Yes, the hitting was contagious.”
The Stars kick off pool play action to determine seeding in bracket play in this double elimination tournament.
“It’s really exciting, but we need to work hard,” said Emily Palmer. “These teams we are going to play are potentially a higher caliber of players. We are thrilled to even be going, and we would love to keep this streak going, however, if that does not happen, this will be a great experience for all of us and we will not let it dampen our spirits.”
