Bob Thouvenel called up Jodi Thomasian, on left, and Bill Burns for The Dalles High School’s Female and Male Scholar Athlete awards. This award goes to a male and female athlete who has excelled at a high level in athletics during the past year and balanced studies to finish with a 3.2 grade point average or better.
Steve Sugg presented Athlete of the Year awards to Paulina Finn, on left, and Glenn Breckterfield. The senior duo were standouts in multiple sports, with Finn making her name in cross country, basketball and track and field; while Breckterfield showed his merits in football, wrestling and track and field this school year.

Completing his first year as athletic director of The Dalles High School, Matt Morgan gave credit and offered praise to several people who have made his job easier as he transitioned into his demanding role.
Wednesday evening at The Dalles Middle School, Morgan, athletic department secretary Alyson Vennewitz, along with coaches Steve Sugg, Bob Thouvenel and Jim Taylor presented plaques to award recipients.
Senior Glenn Breckterfield stood out in football, wrestling and track and field this season and was called to the stage by Sugg as Male Athlete of the Year.
On his way to Oregon State University for an engineering degree, Breckterfield was humbled.
“For me, I think this award means that all the hard work paid off,” Breckterfield said. “You have to work hard if you want to have success. Some kids hate going to practice, but I loved it. That is where I got better as a person and an athlete.”
Taking home Female Athlete of the Year was Clark Community College bound Paulina Finn.
In her first three years, Finn starred at Horizon Christian and transferred to the Dalles.
While there was a bit of transition, it was a move she is happy she made.
“I am glad I got to come here in my senior year, because the teachers and my coaches showed me what I need to do to be successful in the classroom and in sports,” Finn said. “What I learned through high school is definitely going to be a benefit for me when I go to college. I am thankful to everyone who has had a positive impact on my life.”
As the OSAA Award of Excellence Morgan introduced Grace Schatz and Josh Nisbet, for their display of exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and integrity throughout the 2017-2018 school year, and due to their honor and class put forth while representing TDHS, Jenna Miller was given the Vince Peickert Sportsmanship Award by coach Jim Taylor.
Vennewitz honored Alex Seematter with the Special Student Award for her tireless efforts as support to the sports department.
The Dalles three-sport letter athletes were Steven Preston, Miller, Kilee Hoylman, Mercy I’aulualo, Addie Klindt, Reed Twidwell, Jack Bonham, Bailey LeBreton, Jodi Thomasian, Finn, Jonathan Knotts, Breckterfield, Dalles Seufalemua, Lauryn Belanger and Jaeden Biehn earning praise.
There were 19 Riverhawks for their scholastic endeavors as Student Athlete Academic Excellence Award winners for playing multiple sports and finishing in the top-10 of their respective class.

John Frederick was honored for his time with Riverhawk athletics and earned the Amaton Award.

This award goes to a male and female athlete who has excelled in athletics and balanced studies to finish with a 3.2 grade point average or better.
As the seniors bid farewell, they will play a key role in passing the torch to a young generation.
Thomasian, Finn, Knotts, Weir, Nanez, Breckterfield and Burns, to name a few, will now carry on Riverhawk Pride in the next phase of their lives.
