14U Crush grabs two wins at weekend tourney

While their record stood at 2-1-1 in tournament action, the Crush put some solid performances on display with a pair of one-run victories, one of those a late-inning comeback and a tie.

The weekend started off with a bang on a cool Friday night at 16th Street Ballpark versus interstate rivals, the Hood River Heat.

Head coach Bob Delaney’s Crush started off in epic fashion with an exciting come-from-behind triumph.

After leading for the first six innings of softball play, the Crush pitching staff allowed two runs in the top of the seventh frame to trail by a 5-4 margin with only three outs left in the contest.

The Crush began chipping away at their deficit with some timely hits and some gritty at-bats to load the bases with two outs for Shaynie Watson.

Watson then ripped the second pitch she saw for a game-winning, walk-off two-run single to give the Crush a dramatic 6-5 win.

On Saturday at Sorosis Park in The Dalles, the Crush hits the diamond for three games.

In their opener, the Crush added another late comeback to their list of accomplishments and ended up salvaging a 3-3 deadlock against the Kleats.

Hillsboro was the next squad on the docket, and unfortunately for the Crush, they had no answers, as the Thunder forged ahead with a lopsided 12-0 winner.

With those first three games, the Crush went 1-1-1 and still dressed down opposite the Black Magic.

This Crush group engaged in another toe-to-toe slugfest and wound up inching ahead late for the 7-6 decision to end tournament play on the right foot.

“We played a great series of four games in less than 24 hours,” Delaney said. “(The) players played hard and are progressing extremely well.”

The Crush goes to Clackamas for a two-day tournament starting at 9 a.m. on May 11.
