Columbia Gorge Ballers, Makaila Miller, Maddie Brock, Jackie Begay and Sydney Newby dressed down in the 11-team, 10-12-year-old classification and went 3-0 to vault into the semifinals, but lost 17-5, to earn a top-4 finish at the two-day Blazers Rip City 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Portland.
The Ballers locked down a pair of pool play wins in Saturday’s action, 13-11 and 18-4, to pick up a top seed in their division.
In the quarterfinals, they blasted past the opposition by a 16-6 score to get to within one victory of a championship berth.
The breaks didn’t go the Ballers’ way in the semifinals, however, as they were eliminated from title contention following a 17-5 loss to the team that would end up taking first place.
Miller, Brock, Begay and Newby have travel ball experience playing with the Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy last winter under head coach Lindsay Brock, which prepared them for big games against tough teams.
That core will look to add more wins to their totals during tournament action on Aug. 11-12 in Camas, Wash.
