The 2024 baseball season ended for the Sherman/Condon/Wheeler High Huskies after they lost a May 7 Special District 7 playoff game, 7-3, at Union.
The Huskies qualified for the playoffs after finishing fifth in the 10-team league. The Huskies (6-6 SD7, 9-11 overall) needed to win two games to continue postseason play. The confident Huskies had won three of their past five games while Union entered the contest on a three-game losing streak.
The Bobcats capitalized on Husky mistakes (six errors, six walks, hit batter) and they took control of close matchup by scoring six runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
“It was close early in the game and it went back and forth, and we were just kind of holding our own and then we had a couple of bad mistakes and we fell behind. We had guys on second and third base, but we just couldn’t drive home enough runs and then things fell apart for us in the sixth inning. … We just had too many mistakes,” Sherman Coach Joe Justesen said.
Brody Geer (3-for-4) hit a double and then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Carnine for Sherman’s first run. The Huskies had a comeback effort in the top of the seventh, highlighted by RBI singles by Luke Fritts (1-for-1) and Michael Blagg (1-for-3), to trim the margin to 7-3. The Huskies then loaded the bases with two outs and had a batter representing the tying run at the plate, but they were unable to score.
“We could never really get on a good roll during the season. We had a couple of close games that we should’ve won, and we played very well against Heppner [a 12-0 win May 3],” Justesen said.
