North Wasco County School District libraries held a rap rematch between teachers and wordsmiths “Sequential” Seth Hedberg and “Linear” Ben Lin at The Dalles Middle School on May 14.
The rematch was scheduled in an effort to resolve controversy surrounding the rappers’ tie at the last poetry slam on April 17.
According to District Librarian and lead organizer of both events, Jim Tindall, the two educators’ last rap battle was a heated one in which Lin went so far as to crumple up a page of Hedberg’s notes on the premise that rap should be conducted “without a script in front of you.”
A long chain of inflammatory and rhyme-ridden emails, Tindall said, “testify to the strenuous and stress-laden difficulty in collaborative negotiations between the sciences and the humanities, compounded by articulate, rapier-like trash talking.”
However, consensus was eventually reached for mathematician Lin and historian Hedberg to once again go head-to-head.
“Come and watch your favorite math teacher squirm on the ground like a pathetic creature!” Hedberg “scoffed” in the district’s May 5 press release.
However, despite all of the talk, Hedberg was ultimately unable to defeat Lin when it came down to the final battle, according to the district’s final reports.
In a final email in which Hedberg admits defeat, he said, “You all know its true I must admit defeat, I had to pass the mic on and kneel at Lin's feet. It's true I don't have the skills to free style, Lin shredded with words and made us all smile. He called my bluff and now we all know it, Mr. Hedberg is just a simple poet.”
