No matter if the sport is football, track and field or wrestling, The Dalles Middle School coach Paul Beasley is one component being utilized to help bring back the glory days for youths ready to wear Riverhawk colors.
“We have the unique opportunity this year to introduce our young wrestlers to the pride, success and tradition of The Dalles Wrestling programs,” Beasley said.
There are important aspects in place like Coach Keenan Hoar, and volunteers Gabe Red Cloud, Mark Scott and Opath Silopath, along with former The Dalles greats Kevin Kramer and Rich Rolen as the breeding ground for building a wrestling powerhouse down the road.
With the addition of Alexander Kramer, a 2004 graduate of TDHS, standout TDHS wrestler and Southern Oregon University graduate and wrestling team member, to the coaching staff, Beasley added that the program is getting back to basics, demanding academic performance and focusing on retaining wrestlers.
“Alex brings enormous passion, excitement and energy to our program,” Beasley said. “He is as fine an example of a role model for our student-athletes as we could ask for and I could not be prouder to have him on our coaching staff.”
Beasley labels Kevin Kramer and Rolen as TD wrestling royalty for their past successes on and off the mats.
“They bring years of wrestling excellence, both as state and national champions and TDHS coaches of many successful programs, state placers and state champions,” Beasley added. “We are determined to contribute to the long history of wrestling success in The Dalles and retain wrestlers to the high school level for Coach Greg Burkart and his staff to perfect.”
It did not take long in the 2015 middle school campaign for the Wildcats to reap those coaching benefits.
The Dalles Middle School wrestling team had its first meet of the year at Riverside Middle School in Boardman last week and had 25 wrestlers in tow to compete with four other schools, including Riverside, Stanfield, Irrigon and Ione/Echo.
Beasley said there were a number of standout performances from the team, including a number of first-time successes.
He highlighted the exploits of sixth-grade heavyweight Ricardo Gonzalez and top performer Giovanni Avila, who each won all three matches, as well as eighth-grade state placer, JR Scott.
Yordi Sanchez and Andrew Richman, both eighth graders and sixth graders Dusty Dodge and RJ Vega also won their matches, and the group of Marquavious Ware, Louis Red Cloud, Mauricio Carrera and Abraham Vasquez were in tune for their matchups.
“I was most impressed with the fight and effort our wrestlers displayed at our first meet,” Beasley said of his wrestling participants. “We have made the focus of our season on mental toughness and academic success.”
TDMS is back in action next weekend for another critical test in development.
