VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Vancouver police who found a man dead after a car explosion early Tuesday said the blast appeared to be an isolated case and no one else was in danger.
Police did not immediately identify the man.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI and an interagency bomb squad were all reported to be involved in the investigation.
Bomb squad technicians in protective suits and others operating a bomb robot spent hours removing items and debris from the car.
“We’re investigating this car, this driver, this person,” Vancouver police Cmdr. Dave King told The Oregonian. “We’re not looking for outstanding suspects, but we’re pursuing who this person is, what his actions were and how did this result” in death.
A man who lives in the neighborhood told The Columbian newspaper he was pulling out of his driveway at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when he heard the blast.
“I probably backed up a couple feet when I heard the explosion,” said Darek Whiteaker, who called 911, shined his headlights on the car and told dispatchers what he saw.
Every window of the car was blown out, the roof of the vehicle was puffed up and there was glass and foam in the street, he said.
To be safe, he kept his distance and, after police arrived, he went to work.
“I was afraid it might blow up again . I didn’t want to risk my life,” he said. “I waited to see if there was any movement in the car and there wasn’t.”
