HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) girls soccer team lost, 2-0, to visiting Wilsonville on Sept. 30 in a competitive Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) matchup.
The Eagles (5-2-1 overall, 1-1 NWOC as of Oct. 5) entered the game boasting a four-match win streak, which included recent back-to-back road wins: an 8-0 win over St. Helens on Sept. 18, and a 4-1 NWOC victory over Putnam on Sept. 25.
Wilsonville (8-2, 3-0), led by University of Idaho soccer commit and reigning OSAA Class 5A state player of the year, Camryn Schaan, has its eye on its fifth straight state title.
HRV Coach Kevin Haspela said: “Wilsonville is excellent all over the place. They have some individual skill that is outstanding. I thought we hung with their best players. Camryn Schaan was the state player of the year from last year. … Really dynamic. A little hard to stay with her. And number 26 (Justine Sheets), the center midfielder, was very dominant.
“We defended pretty well, and they scored in a corner, and then they had a well-earned goal in the second half. Our girls didn’t cave. We kept the fight. We had some flashes. We were excited to get more of the ball.”
Both sides started the game with 16 minutes of great defense, but eventually, Wilsonville’s Lyla Johnson scored a goal off a corner kick with 23:59 left to play in the half. HRV senior keeper Valeria Miramontes-Alvarez responded with a couple of solid saves to prevent any more damage from the Wildcats.
Wilsonville’s Bella Moultrie scored a breakaway goal with 33:46 to go in the second half.
Haspela said Wilsonville is the standard at which HRV aspires in girls soccer. “Now we know that’s the bar. That’s where we have to step up. Part of it is skill. Part of it is fitness and determination to be a ball winner, and we talked about that. So, for us, we’re like, how do we move the ball faster as a team? How do we win more of those 50-50 balls? And those are the lessons we’re going to take from [the] game.”
