DUFUR — The top-ranked Dufur High football team squandered a 29-0 second-half lead on Oct. 3, but hung on for a 35-30, Class 1A eight-man win against visiting Imbler.
The Rangers (6-0 overall, 3-0 Special District 3) took advantage of more precise play en route to a four-touchdown (and a safety) advantage before Imbler started to clean up its offensive act and exploit the Ranger secondary. Imbler, which was hurt by penalties throughout the contest, scored 24 straight points to pull within 29-24 in the final period.
Dufur quarterback Gavin Anderson, who seeks contact when he runs, bulled his way into the end zone in the closing minutes on a 10-yard scamper around right end to score what proved to be the game winner.
Imbler (ranked 10th, 2-3 overall, 1-1 SD3) added another TD a short time later, and the Panthers recovered an ensuing onside kick. But the football hadn’t gone the required 10 yards, so Dufur got possession. Coach Jack Henderson called five running plays, the final one a kneel down by Anderson, and time expired.
In other Special District 3 games this past week, Lyle lost 66-48 at Elgin, slipping from a tie for third place down into a tie for fifth.
In six-man football, Coach Paul Bish’s Sherman Huskies won 46-13 Oct. 3 at Dayville. It was the fifth straight victory for Sherman, which is ranked fifth and tied for second in Special District 1 standings. The Huskies (5-1) play at 1-5 Wallowa on Oct. 10 before what arguably will be their most important contest this fall, an Oct. 17 showdown against unbeaten Harper Charter.
Also in six-man contests, South Wasco County earned its first played win (the Redsides also have a forfeit win), a dominate, 59-24, victory at Ione/Arlington (Oct. 3 at Arlington High School).
