The Dalles High Riverhawks also split two nonleague home baseball games last week, including a 9-4 victory over the Newport High Cubs on March 18, followed by an 11-10 loss to the Class 2A Blanchet Catholic High Cavaliers (4-0) on March 21.
“Nobody was happy about our loss to Blanchet,” said Coach Pat Clark. “We just didn’t play up to our potential and it was a close game.”
The Cubs (3-2) were seeking to get a third consecutive victory in a contest consisting of two teams that were in the 2023 OSAA Class 4A state playoffs. After the Cubs took a 1-0 third-inning lead, the Riverhawks responded by scoring nine runs over the next three innings to build a 9-1 fifth inning advantage.
Newport, guided by Coach Taylor Plesha, had a late rally, trimming the final margin to 9-4. The Riverhawks were led offensively by Will Booth (3-for-4, three RBI), Cody Agidius (2-for-4, four RBI), Cooper Klindt (1-for-3, RBI) and Avery Schwartz (1-for-2, RBI). Riverhawk pitchers Booth, Evan Ortega, Nolan Donivan, Cooper Cummings, and Sam Shaver combined for 14 strikeouts, seven walks and six hits.
“Our comeback effort was a little too late, but I’m proud of our guys because they always compete really hard,” said Plesha, who has guided Newport to the state playoffs seven straight years. “That’s just part of the process that helps us to improve by playing tough opponents on the road. They (Riverhawks) are a really good team, and The Dalles Coach Pat Clark does a really good job and I have a lot of respect for their program.”
