THE DALLES — The Dalles softball team seems to have bounced back from its disastrous preseason — that saw it lose eight in a row — and the Riverhawks are now positioned in second place in the Tri-Valley Conference behind No. 11-ranked and 8-1 Gladstone.
The defending TVC champion Riverhawks (7-2 TVC, 8-9 overall) have won seven of their past eight games and have held their opponents to one run or less in six games.
The Dalles, coached by Duane Witter, won three games this past week: two against Estacada (4-5, 12-8) on April 29 and 30, and another against Molalla (2-7, 7-10) on May 2. The Riverhawks’ two-game series against Estacada began on April 28 with a 3-1 win that featured 12 strikeouts from junior pitcher Siyra Faulkner. Senior shortstop Maddie Brock went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
On April 30, the Riverhawks held the lead through most of the game and exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning. Brock led the offense again, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Faulkner pitched six innings and recorded six strikeouts and also had two hits and one RBI. Third baseman Makenzie Barrett went 2-for-2 and an RBI.
It was a similar story on May 2 against Molalla in The Dalles. The home team led 3-1 through the fifth inning and scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. All but one Riverhawk who stepped to the plate recorded a hit. Junior Ava Graves was 4-for-4 with an RBI, and junior catcher Hailey Johnston (2-for-4) had a team-high three RBIs and a home run to open the sixth inning. The Riverhawks won 11-1 and improved their TVC record to 7-2, one game behind Gladstone.
The Dalles was scheduled to finish its series against Molalla on May 5 and then will play each TVC team once more over the next two weeks. The Riverhawks end their season with a nonleague game against No. 4 Dallas (5A) on May 22.
