The Emerald Team Challenge held in Eugene on March 4 proved to be one of the most exciting meets so far this season for Hood River Optional level competitors for Riverside Gymnastics Academy. This meet brought in some of the top Brevet judges from around the country. A Brevet judge is certified to judge internationally at the Elite (Olympic) Level. The competition was stiff, but three Hood River girls rose to the occasion.
Jacy Johnston, competing at Level 6 in the Junior Division, stood atop the podium in first place, earning her the title of beam champion with a score of 9.625. She also took home fourth-place finishes in vault (9.15), floor (9.4) and all-around (36.85).
Nina Sanchez-Macias stood on the podium in third place for vault (9.15) and all-around (36.65) in the Level 6 Senior Division. She also landed a fourth-place finish on bars with a 9.0 and fifth on floor with a 9.25.
Poppy Miller, who competes at the Level 7, brought in two great scores with a 9.05 on vault and a 9.0 on floor.
All three Hood River Middle School girls are training hard with the goal of peaking at the 2017 Oregon Optional State Championships, which will be held on March 17-18 at the Portland Convention Center.
