Sawyer Bogard sees difficult competition at state tennis tournament Sawyer Bogard, a junior who was the lone representative for HRV boys tennis at the 5A state tournament last weekend in the Portland metro area, failed to advance past two matches in singles play, facing some difficult competition. In the opening round, Bogard fell to St. Helens’ Carsten Gilje, whom HRV Head Coach Jon Hiatt said was once on the Norwegian Junior National Team. He lost 6-3 in the first set and 6-0 in the second. Bogard then dropped to the consolation bracket, where he lost to Redmond’s Benny Saito, 8-1, in the first round. Saito would go on to win the consolation title. “So, to say the least, it was a tough draw,” Hiatt said. “Sawyer played hard and represented HRV well.” For the fourth year in a row, Summit, who is in HRV’s district, won the overall state title.
Baseball to play Dallas in first round of state tourney
The HRV baseball team has known since May 2 they would be hosting an opponent in the first round of the OSAA 5A state tournament (that’s the date they locked up their third conference title in a row), but didn’t know who it would be. After last Friday’s play-in games, they have their answer: No. 6 HRV (19-7) will host No. 11 Dallas (16-11) of the Mid-Willamette Conference this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. HRV has not faced the Dragons yet this season and they have no shared opponents. Through 27 games, Dallas has scored 178 runs and allowed 166. In 26 games, HRV has scored 171 and allowed 106. Winner of this competition will face either No. 3 Crescent Valley or No. 14 Marist Catholic in a quarterfinal game May 26. The Eagles are the only Columbia River Conference team to make it into the tournament — The Dalles lost 3-2 to Putnam in their play-in game Friday and Pendleton lost 9-4 to Milwaukie. Hermiston did not qualify for a play-in game.
