Jared Davis, a 2015 graduate of Horizon Christian School, has signed to play NCAA Division II basketball at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo, and has received a scholarship as well. Davis wrapped up his senior basketball season playing for the Hawks with second-team All-State Honors in the 1A classification. Davis was instrumental in leading the Hawks through a remarkable season during which the team was ranked first overall in 1A and finished with a perfect 14-0 league record, a 27-4 overall record, and third place in the state tournament. Davis also played soccer, baseball, and track for Horizon, but says he plans to focus solely on basketball at Fort Lewis College.
Erin Jones heads to Olympic qualifier event
Erin Jones, a 2009 Hood River Valley High School, has been selected to compete in the 2015 Rio de Janeiro International Triathlon Union World Olympic Qualification Event this Sunday in Brazil. Jones is one of nine American women competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic triathlon team roster that will head to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. The top two American female finishers automatically qualify for the Olympics, so competition will be even stiffer than usual.
Vote for HR women for SUP honor
Two Hood River women have been nominated to receive stand-up paddleboarding publication SUPConnect’s 2015 Woman of the Year award: Fiona Wylde and Nikki Gregg. Wylde, who SUPS professionally, was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, but hasn’t slowed down. SUPConnect says Wylde is “becoming all the more of an inspiration for the millions of people who face that challenge while aiming to continue to live that outdoors athletic life.” Gregg is credited on SUPConnect’s website as a pioneer of SUP, developing a “whole new modality” for the sport, promoting it as an activity for personal fitness when it was primarily viewed as either a surfing or racing discipline.
