THE DALLES — After a first-round exit from the Class 4A state playoffs last season, The Dalles softball team was back on the field this week with a new head coach, Duane Witter, and two nonleague games against North Marion and La Grande.
In August, Lindy Macnab announced her resignation as the softball head coach. In two seasons Macnab compiled a 47-6 record, back-to-back Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) championships, and Class 4A state title in 2023.
Witter, a former assistant coach for the softball team, has been hired to lead the Riverhawk softball program this season.
The Dalles opened its season on March 17 with a dominant win over North Marion, 20-5.
The Riverhawks followed that with a lopsided loss to La Grande, 14-3, on March 19 in The Dalles.
According to the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), the La Grande game was “under protest from The Dalles coach for rules interpretation that led to a The Dalles player being called out during an illegal pitch play.” The appeal was reviewed, and the game is final, according to the Mid-Columbia Umpires Association.
The Riverhawks will continue nonleague games through April 11, including a rivalry game against Hood River Valley on April 10 in The Dalles. They open TVC play with two matchups against the Crook County Cowgirls — one away April 14 and one at home on April 16.
