The Dalles High Riverhawks wrestling team capped its season with Alexander De La Torre and Josh Breckenbury competing in the OSAA Class 4A state tournament Feb. 22-23 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
De La Torre finished fifth at 157 pounds.
“Alexander was right there and winning 7-1 in the quarterfinals and then he made a mistake and turned his back and got pinned. The two guys he lost to took second and third place in the state in their class, so Alexander was right there competing with the best of them,” Coach Barry Abrams said.
De La Torre, a sophomore, won four of six matches and scored 16.5 points. He concluded the season with a record of 34-7, including 29 wins by fall. De La Torre was the first boys state placer since JR Scott in 2019.
De La Torre started won his first match by fall over Connor Glasser of Estacada before losing in the quarterfinals to Luke Rosa of Sweet Home. De La Torre followed by winning two consolation round matches — by fall over Turner Jackson of Estacada and by fall over Brody Van Gastel of Mazama.
De La Torre lost in the consolation semifinals by fall to Zach Humphrey of Hidden Valley and bounced back to win the fifth-place match by fall over Glasser.
Breckenbury, a sophomore, competed in the 165-pound division, losing both of his matches. Breckenbury had an overall record of 23-11.
“Josh did great this year after having a late start because he was recovering from a concussion that he had after playing on the football team,” said Abrams. “A lot people hope to qualify for state and they don’t make it, so it’s a great accomplishment for the guys that do qualify.”
