THE DALLES — On a day when many of The Dalles High School’s track and field athletes were training through to a weekend meet, freshman Willow Ziegenhagen had a three-personal record day in a Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) gathering April 30 in Madras.
Ziegenhagen ran the 100 meters in a PR 13.38 seconds, the 200 meters in 27.57 (PR), and threw the javelin 112 feet, 3 inches. (She would surpass that javelin mark on May 2 in Hermiston)
There were plenty of other highlights for the Riverhawks, some coming in unconventional events. For example, senior Julian Morehouse did some speed work for his pole vault training and ran the 100 meters in a PR 11.79; teammate Creighton Clack ran 11.88. Morehouse also cleared 14-6 in the vault.
Also in the field, sophomore Adam Trosper threw a PR 98-1 in the boys discus.
On the girls side, freshman Nora Macnab cleared 4-4 in the high jump and leapt 14-4 in the long jump (the latter a PR).
TD at Kiwanis Twilight Invite
The Dalles High’s track and field team recorded 18 individual personal bests May 2 at the Kiwanis Twilight Invitational at Hermiston High School.
The Riverhawk boys were led by the efforts of its relay team members. The Dalles’ 4x100 meter relay dipped under 44 seconds for the first time this season with a 43.21 first-place clocking. David McCracken, Derek Goulart, River McClure, and Zachary Rawls clicked on their handoffs and edged Kennewick, Washington, and Hermiston — who were at 43.43 and 43.45.
The short relay time for Coach Garth Miller’s team trails only the 43.10 by Madras in the TVC for 2025. The Riverhawks’ long relay is also No. 2 (behind Crook County), having lowered its season best to 3 minutes, 29.78 seconds at the Hermiston meet. Relay team members were Vincent Ziegenhagen, Tyson Long, Noah Preston, and McClure.
McClure added a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles of 39.22; Long was third in the 800 (2:03.4); Noah Preston ran the open 400 in 52.45; and McCracken doubled in the sprints, placing in both races — fifth, 22.97 PR 200 and seventh, 10.93 PR 100. Also on the track, Goulart added a PR 100 (11.26), and Ziegenhagen ran the 300 meter hurdles in 44.24.
In field events, Goulart won the high jump at 6-2, while Shea Anderson was second at 5-10. Senior Julian Morehouse was second in the pole vault at 14-6. And Anthony Santana had a good day in the horizontal jumps, bounding a PR 40-8 in the triple jump and reaching 19-7 in the long jump.
The Dalles girls had four individual placers (top eight finishes) in the meet and two placing relays. The top finish came from Alaina Casady, who was third in the 1500 in 5:06.61 — she also ran a 2:39.41 800 (ninth).
Sprinter Marie-Louise McCracken was busy, racing to a PR in the 100 of 13.16, running the 200 in 28.63, and running a leg on The Dalles’ eighth-place 4x100 relay. The team of McCracken, Noraya Gallegos, Willow Ziegenhagen, and Sydney Newby ran 53.62. The Riverhawks’ 4x400 relay ran a season best 4:26.02; Laura Black, Ziegenhagen, Ebany Mondragon, and Gabrielle Kahler finished fourth overall.
Each had individual highlights: Black ran a 1:04.14 400 and cleared a PR 7-6 in the pole vault; Newby went 4-10 in the high jump and ran a PR 13.91 100; and Ziegenhagen threw the javelin a PR 113-1 and also went 4-10 in the high jump. Rowena Benjamin added an 8-foot pole vault effort; and long jumpers Olivia Prado and Gallegos went 15-6.5 and 15-4 in the long jump, respectively.
