THE DALLES — The defending Tri-Valley Conference champion The Dalles High Riverhawks are on the verge of capturing a second consecutive league baseball title.
With two games remaining on their regular-season schedule, the No. 15-ranked Riverhawks (10-2 TVC, 12-11 overall) are atop the six-team league standings. The Riverhawks won two-of-three games last week to remain in first place.
The Riverhawks had a rough start to last week’s three-game schedule, as they lost 12-2 at home May 5 to the No. 10-ranked Molalla High Indians (8-4 league, 16-6 overall). The defeat was their most lopsided loss this year.
The Riverhawks responded by winning two straight to regain their momentum. The Riverhawks won a come-from-behind May 7 home game, 7-6, over the Crook County High Cowboys (4-8 TVC, 6-13 overall). The Riverhawks came back behind a three-run fourth inning rally to go on top, 5-4. After a scoreless fifth, the Riverhawks added a run in the sixth for a 6-4 lead. The Cowboys responded by scoring two in the top of the seventh, knotting it 6-6. The Riverhawks then scored one in the bottom half of the frame.
Senior starting pitcher Avery Schwartz (nine strikeouts, four walks, eight hits allowed) pitched six and two-third innings. Relief pitcher Trey Hodges got the final out (strikeout).
The Riverhawks were led offensively by Cody Agidius (1-for-3, RBI), Schwartz (1-for-4, RBI), Sawyer Dray (2-for-3, RBI), Finley Corbin (1-for-4, RBI) and Daylee Miller (1-for-3, two RBIs). Both teams had eight hits, but Crook County had five errors to one for The Dalles.
Playing on back-to-back days, the Riverhawks followed with a, 13-7, home win May 8 over the Madras High White Buffaloes (1-11 TVC, 3-18 overall). The Riverhawks pulled away with a four-run fifth inning to build a 12-4 lead. The Riverhawks outhit the White Buffaloes 11-7.
The Riverhawks were led offensively by Will Booth (1-for-2, RBI), Hodges (2-for-4, four RBIs), Evan Ortega (2-for-4, three RBIs), Schwartz (2-for-4) and Dray (2-for-5). Starting pitcher Hodges combined with relief pitcher Gunnar Bustos for seven strikeouts, five walks and five earned runs.
The Riverhawks play their next contest on May 14 in a 5:30 p.m. senior night home game versus the Estacada High Rangers (5-7 TVC, 12-10 overall). Riverhawk seniors Schwartz, Corbin, Trace Larson, Booth, Hodges, Agidius and Sonny Wilson will be honored in a pregame ceremony. The Riverhawks follow with a 5:30 p.m. road game May 15 against Molalla.
