THE DALLES — The Dalles High struggled to contain visiting La Grande High’s running game when it mattered most, and lost 27-7 to the Tigers on Oct. 14 on senior night at Sid White Field.
The Riverhawks (3-5,1-2), led by its 12 honored seniors, battled all game against La Grande (4-4, 3-0).
“We had some untimely mistakes and really close calls,” The Dalles Coach Nate Timmons said. “Football really is a game of inches, and we were a couple of inches short on one too many plays. I’m super proud of all my seniors, though. They fought hard and they played hard all the way to the end.”
La Grande jumped out to a 21-0 lead. La Grande sophomore quarterback Jack Musgrove broke off a 22-yard, first-quarter touchdown to start the scoring run for the Tigers. Early in the second quarter, Musgrove threw a touchdown pass to senior wideout Landon Hood to push the lead to 14-0.
Hood found the endzone for a second time in the quarter with a 78-yard touchdown run. The point-after kick was good, and La Grande led 21-0 with 5:54 left in the half.
Senior linebacker Josh Brackenbury came up with an interception for The Dalles at its 40-yard line with 3:27 left in the half, which later set up a 20-yard scramble from senior quarterback Logan Mitchell.
Following a timeout, Mitchell found tight end Hunter Bustos on a jump ball in the end zone from 10 yards away with 43 seconds left in the half.
The Tigers added on an insurance TD midway through the third period.
The Riverhawks play their final game of the regular season at Baker at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. With a win, The Dalles remains in contention for a Class 4A playoff berth.
