The Hood River Valley Athletics Department has released their athletes of the month for January: Grace Miller, representing HRV girls wrestling; Josie Petersen, representing HRV girls skiing; and Montana Kurahara, representing HRV boys skiing.
Grace Miller
Frosh Grace Miller wrestled extraordinarily in the month of January. She began the month unranked and has earned the No. 1 seed going into the Oregon State Girls Wrestling State Championships on Feb. 26-27 at the Portland Memorial Coliseum. Miller has earned a 23-6 record against other girl wrestlers this season. She has been on the podium at the Kelso Tournament, the Elmira Tournament, the Hanford Tournament, the Oregon Classic, the Grandview Tournament and the Hood River Elks Tournament. Miller has not lost this season to a girl from Oregon. Her only losses are to out-of-state wrestlers. Miller earned a 3.25 GPA her first term of high school. She is a three-sport athlete, competing for HRV in volleyball and softball.
Josie Petersen
Josie Petersen is a freshman on the HRV ski team, and has established herself as the top girls team performer after four of six Mt. Hood League races. Petersen always brings a smile and a great attitude to training and events — she consistently achieves podium results in slalom and giant slalom, and is also a top slopestyle athlete in our freestyle events. Petersen also ran varsity cross country and competed in the state meet this fall. She earned a 4.0 GPA in her first term at HRV.
Montana Kurahara
As a senior, Montana Kurahara has won every ski race he has entered this season. It is not uncommon for Montana to win races by four to five seconds per run. Kurahara is a team player, including his solid contribution to the HRV football team, where he was a First Team All-Conference tight end and a Second Team All-Conference defensive lineman. Kurahara is also a great student, with a 3.55 GPA going into his final term at HRV.
