HOOD RIVER – Fans packed Vannet Court for senior night on Oct. 23, and the Hood River Valley Eagle volleyball team didn’t disappoint, sweeping Milwaukie at Hood River Valley High School.
“I feel like all the improvements that they have made individually showed tonight, and that was really, really fun to watch,” first-year Coach Emily Curtis said after the game. “I’m very proud of our seniors. I’m going to miss them dearly. That was a great way to go out.”
In the first set, the Eagles (9-14) built a 16-7 lead before the Mustangs (4-15) battled back with four straight points to make it 16-11. Hood River answered with a four-point run before the Mustangs closed to within 22-17, which prompted a timeout from Curtis. Later, an ace from sophomore Emma Malley made it set point, and a kill from freshman Tia Britt ended the match for the Eagles, 25-17.
The teams traded points to open up the second before Hood River Valley separated to 14-11 off a cross-court kill from senior Emily Doss. The Eagles separated even further to 23-17 before a kill from senior Grace Kerr set up set point, and a defensive error from the Mustangs ended the set, 25-17.
The third set was more of the same as the Eagles started hot, building a 16-1 lead. Hood River Valley continued to build its lead to 23-5 before a block from freshman Eleanor Buser set up set point, and a defensive error from the Mustangs ended the match, 25-5.
After the Hood River Valley win, in its final home game of the season, Curtis sounded off on her first-year experience.
“I learned lots of things, which I knew would happen. I think I’ll always be learning new things,” she said. “These girls have just been a great first group, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I’m very, very excited to come back and watch more of them grow.”
The Eagles have one more game, at Hillsboro on Oct. 28. HRV will finish alone in sixth place in the Northwest Oregon Conference with a win.
