HOOD RIVER – Unbeaten La Salle Prep scored the game’s only goal early in the second half and held off host Hood River Valley, 1-0, last week in a Class 5A girls soccer match.
The Sept. 17 game was a nail-biter, with Hood River’s defense consistently strong and cohesive throughout the evening, backed by junior goalkeeper Uma Carosella - who made four saves in the first half to keep La Salle (3-0-1) at bay.
HRV Coach Kevin Haspela said: “The girls played with intensity. They played as a team, and we fixed some of our tactical challenges and played a really close game against a really strong team, so I am happy with their performance.”
After the La Salle goal five minutes after halftime, the Eagles did not give up and drove the ball back toward the opposing goal numerous times. Junior forward Josie Faaborg was a “workhorse for us all night long,” Haspela said. Senior midfielder Ainsley Chown and sophomore midfielder Ellie Kinsfogel also were recognized by Coach Haspela for their performance. “(They) were fierce and composed and made great passes.”
Hood River’s team dynamic was notable throughout the entirety of the game, with excellent communication and an overall positive attitude. Kinsfogel credited this as a key to success in the past, saying: “We all care for each other very much, and have good relationships off the field.”
The Eagles entered the week 3-3 in their nonleague games and were ranked 13th in the OSAA 5A state rankings. HRV was scheduled to play road games at 6A McMinnville on Sept. 22, at 5A Woodburn on Sept. 24 and then return home for a game at Henderson Stadium vs. 6A Sherwood High.
