WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins are enjoying success this year in WIAA Class 1A Trico League baseball, as they’re in fourth place in the eight-team standings at the midway point of the season.
The Bruins (5-3 Trico, 5-7 overall), guided by Coach William Gross, snapped a three-game losing streak with a confidence building, 10-3 home win April 16 over the King’s Way Christian High Knights (4-5 Trico, 6-7 overall).
“It was a really big win for us over King’s Way, because they’ve been one of the top league contenders for the last five to seven years, so that really helped provide us with some momentum,” said Gross.
The pitching duo of Kellen Olson and Trenton Boydston combined on the mound for eight strikeouts and six hits. The Bruins had 10 hits and they were led offensively by Boydston (2-for-4, two RBI), Gabe Borton (2-for-4, two RBI), Ryder Graves (1-for-3, RBI) and Garrick Sauter (2-for-4, two RBI).
On April 15, the Bruins lost their third straight contest, 8-2, to the Knights in Vancouver. They responded well to the setback by coming back and getting a win the next day at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
The Bruins were hoping to win their second straight game April 21 at home versus the No. 12-ranked, defending league champion Seton Catholic High Cougars (8-0 Trico, 11-3 overall).
“It’s going to be a really good test for us when we face Seton this week, which is a highly regarded team for sure,” said Gross. “Seton has won the district title the last two years, so they’re a very solid team.”
