It took some time for the Horizon boys to get going in their game against the Country Christian basketball team Tuesday evening, but after a slow start, the Hawks went on to have their best outing of the season.
After trailing the Cougars (0-3) by a point at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks (3-2) went on a field-goal bonanza in the second, scoring 30 points — their most productive eight minutes of the season — on their way to a 64-50 victory. Horizon took advantage of a Country Christian team that relied heavily on, but struggled mightily with outside shooting, hitting only five of their 21 attempts (24 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hawks successfully pounded the paint against the Cougars, outrebounding their opponents 30-26, and making 26 of their 46 attempts (57 percent) on two-point shots, while only shooting the three-ball five times in the game, hitting it twice (40 percent).
Horizon big man Ian Walker had a near-perfect performance Tuesday evening at the Hawks nest, pouring in a team-high 20 points, going 8-for-9 from the field (89 percent) and 3-for-4 from the foul line (75 percent), as well as scoring on his only three attempt of the night. He was backed up by Derek Johnston, who scored 15 (7-for-12, 58 percent), led the team with five steals, and tied Ethan Evans (10 points) with a team-best six rebounds. Luke Holste also had a good night, going 4-for-4 from the field on two-pointers, and while Quinn Roetcisoender had an uncharacteristically quiet night on offense with two points, he helped out his teammates with a team-leading five assists.
Horizon, rising to No. 8 in 1A boys basketball with the defeat of Country Christian, will have another home game on Wednesday, hosting top-ranked Damascus Christian (3-1) at 4 p.m.
