For the second time this season, a top-ranked 4A team got the better of the No. 13 Eagles, who lost to No. 1 Gladstone last week and dropped a road game to No. 8 Banks, 10-4, Tuesday afternoon.
All it took was a bad third inning by the HRV softball team (6-5) for Banks (3-2) to pull far ahead, with the Braves putting up seven runs in the inning to go up 8-0 after scoring their initial run in the second inning. In addition to some heavy Banks bats, HRV also committed three errors in the third inning alone, one of which helped the Braves score a pair of runs.
“We had some great moments, but they were over shadowed by a bad defensive inning allowing seven runs in the bottom of the third,” said HRV Head Coach Eric Keller. “We have to figure out a way to string seven good innings together and not allow mistakes to compound in the opponent putting up a crooked number.”
The Eagles continued the rally in the top of the fifth, when Vallejo grounded out to second, but paved the way for Emily Curtis to advance home from third. Munn got her second of the day on a popup single to left field, plating Haylee Baker to make it 8-4. Banks added another two runs in the same inning for the final margin.
Kaylin Winans was the starting pitcher for HRV, tossing four innings. She struck out one and gave up seven hits and two earned runs. Lauren Decker pitched the remaining two innings, striking out one and giving up one hit and two earned runs.
The Eagles were scheduled to host 6A Tigard (7-3) this Friday at 4:30 p.m. (results not available at press time) and then finish off their regular season Wednesday when they host Redmond (3-6) at 4:30. HRV kicks off league competition with a doubleheader against Pendleton (9-2) April 16 at Westside Elementary.
