THE HRV TENNIS TEAMS wasted no time getting back into form after spring break, with the girls varsity team winning all but one match in back-to-back home competitions against the Pendleton Buckaroos on Wednesday and then shutting out the St. Helens Lions on Thursday. For not having many outside practices, the HRV girls tennis team seems to be no worse for the wear as the Eagles kept rolling this week with crushing defeats of Pendleton on Wednesday and St. Helens on Thursday — both in Hood River. HRV won their conference opener against Pendleton 7-1 and followed that performance by breaking out the brooms and sweeping St. Helens, taking every set and only losing eight games in the varsity matches.
Head Coach Erin Mason couldn’t find fault with his athletes’ play, calling it “a pretty fantastic week of tennis,” but noted that the team has “not been met with much resistance this season,” and knows there will be tougher competitions ahead.
“I am pretty stoked, as we have been on a roll… but I want my team to celebrate their wins and learn from their losses also,” he explained. “I want them to be pushed and challenged, and there will be teams this season that put us to the test. I welcome these matches when they come, as it makes us better as players and as a team.”
The girls next match will be a road contest at Ridgeview this Saturday.

Boys tennis sweeps Pendleton
The HRV boys tennis team pummeled the Pendleton Buckaroos in their league debut in Eastern Oregon Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Bucks in sets and only losing a total of five games.
“Great start to the league season,” said HRV Head Coach Jon Hiatt.
Pendleton has been unable to field complete teams for the past couple seasons and 2017 is proving to be no different, as the Eagles grabbed wins due to Buckaroos forfeits in the No. 4 singles, No. 3 doubles, and No. 4 double matches.
In the top singles position, Sawyer Bogard blanked his opponent, Silas Johnston, in both sets. Chris Riviello and Ben Fick defeated Easton Phelan and Jeremy Sellers 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches, respectively.
In doubles competition, Arnulfo Perez and Jay Fiedler defeated the duo of Schmitz/Harrison by scores of 6-1 in both sets of the No. 1 match, while Adam and Luke Harter took down Mendoza/Savage 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 2 slot.
At long last, the boys will have their first home match of the season, hosting Ridgeview this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Tsuruta Tennis Courts.
