Dufur misses 1A playoffs
For the first time since 2009, the Dufur High Rangers will not be in the Class 1A eight-man football playoffs. The Rangers (2-4 SD3, 2-7 overall), guided by longtime Coach Jack Henderson, concluded the Special District 3 season with a 52-26 loss to the No. 8-ranked Perrydale High Pirates (4-2 SD3, 7-2 overall) on Oct. 27 at Perrydale High School.
“We had a young team this season; we started four freshmen in every game, and we made good progress, so we’re excited about the future of our team and we’re hoping to get back to the playoffs next year,” Henderson said. “Our kids did a good job and we improved steadily throughout the season and I’m really proud of them.”
Senior running back Cody Phillips led the Ranger offense with 173 yards rushing on 33 carries.
The contest marked the final game of the Dufur football career for seniors JJ Johnston, Olson Meanus III, Sam Radcliffe, Phillips, Mason Morris, and Donald Brewster. “Cody and Olson played on our team for four years and when they were sophomores, we were the best team in the state at 6-0 during the 2021 COVID-shortened spring season, but we didn’t get the recognition that state champions get,” said Henderson. “All our seniors contributed well this year to help our team improve.”
