PORTLAND – Today (Aug. 10) at an event along the Columbia River in Portland, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan announced the $79 million investment from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to protect and restore the Columbia River Basin, according to a press release from the EPA.
It used to be an industrial site, but now, Nichols Natural Area is, well, a natural area.
Located on a roughly 3-acre conservation easement on the banks of the Columbia River at the Hood River Waterfront, the former Nichols Boatworks property has undergone quite a few changes in the last several years.
An intensive three-year water quality study of the Deschutes River drainage—which includes the Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius rivers—has been completed and information on their findings were made available at an open house in The Dalles Monday night at The Riv. The study found that “there are many ways in which the Deschutes is thriving...other aspects of river health, such as nutrient and algae levels, are more concerning.”
