THE DALLES — Wasco County commissioners agreed to buy a downtown parcel for $3.08 million and immediately lease it back to the private developer building the Basalt Commons housing and commercial project on April 1.
The Dalles Urban Renewal Agency will continue its work, but will eschew building ownership and redevelopment in favor of planning and overseeing needed and significant infrastructure projects in the future.
Work began Tuesday afternoon on the removal of the damaged roof from the Recreation Building, where interior beams sag dramatically and banks of ceiling-suspended TVs are askew.
There will always be a lane of travel open for vehicles on Second Street during the demo, the contractor said.
